OUR STORY
The owner:
Hilary became the owner of Nina Chicago in September of 2017. After learning to knit and crochet in 2008, she became obsessed with all things yarn and began working for the original owner, Nina, in 2009. After Hilary purchased the business, she arrived the next day to open her very own shop for the first time. The very first customer to walk in the door that day was Kristin Oldach of Kraeo Fuzz Family, who was just starting her independent yarn dying business.
The dyer:
Around that same time, Kristin was selling her hand-made accessories. Starting to get a little burnt out, she started dabbling in yarn dyeing as an escape from the daily grind of making hats and scarves. She was immediately in love and knew exactly what she wanted to do. One day she walked into Nina Chicago with her husband to browse colorways and get a sense of the indie dyer market. On that day, she become the very first customer of the new Nina Chicago.
A New Indie Dyed Yarn Team in Chicago was born…
That day was a turning point in history for both Hilary and Kristin. They happily introduced themselves to each other and began talking about all the plans they had for their new businesses. It didn’t take long for Hilary to become the first wholesale customer of Kristin’s new dyeing business, Kraeo Fuzz Family.
After selling Kristin’s yarn in her shop for a while, Hilary was looking for a line that would fill a gap in the market, a line that would be exclusive to Nina Chicago. She didn’t have to look far because she knew Kristin would be the perfect fit to dye exclusively for the shop. They immediately started collaborating and Wicker Park Worsted was born! It was immediately popular and followed by other bases in the same colors.
Years later, the Movers & Makers line continues to be the most popular yarn at Nina Chicago. The rainbow of tonal solids pair well with so many other hand-dyes and are the perfect fit for so many projects. The current line of colors pays homage to the shop’s old location, where the owner and dyer met for the first time.
Hilary and Kristin maintain an amazing partnership and friendship today. They will continue working together to bring you incredible yarns!
