Hilary has been wanting to do this one for years, and it is finally happening!

Square-ish all began nearly a decade ago, all the way back in 2016. Hilary was trying to recreate a simple boxy summer top that she loved, but had become a bit too well worn. She wanted it to be constructed in the easiest way possible.

Not having designed much at that time, the first attempt was a total failure in terms of replication... but it turned out to be something else awesome, and it was then that Square-ish was born!

The original Square-ish was made out of Shibui Twig, and using a simple garter stitch pattern throughout made it very stretchy, and it somehow looked amazing on everyone who tried it on.

You could wear it wider as a poncho-style or make it narrower for something with less positive ease and a bit more fitting.

 

 

Over the last nine years, Square-ish has been made out of several different yarns, the latest being out of Ritual Dyes Undine, shown here.

 

Hilary eventually went on to create a few more versions Square-ish, including Still Square-ish and Square-ish Striped. She also began writing in sizing options for some of the patterns to take a little of the guesswork out of it.

For Square-a-thon, you can make any of the options above! Your pattern is free with your yarn purchase.

For Square-ish Striped, we recommend Ritual Dyes Undine DK OR Kelbourne Woolens Mojave

The Square-a-Thon KAL runs on Saturdays from 3pm to 5pm beginning June 7th and ending July 26th, when we will kick off the 2025 Chicago Yarn Crawl. Participation in the KAL and your pattern are free with your yarn purchase. We understand that sometimes you might already have stash yarn you want to use, so if that is the case, you can still join the KAL, but must purchase your pattern separately.
