October 17th, 31st & November 14th
It's time to knit a shawl for fall! This is the perfect class to cast on that shawl you've been wanting to make, but maybe you were hoping for some guidance along the way. This is a great time to flex what you already know and learn something new on the way! Hilary will be on hand to help you with whatever you desire to accomplish next. Please note that you should be very comfortable with knitting basics, including casting on, knitting and purling.
This class takes place over three 2-hours sessions, beginning Saturday, October 17th. You can choose any shawl you want to make! As always, Hilary has some suggestions, listed in the order shown in the photo:
Let's Shawl Together by Crystal Hiatt - This shawl is an engaging piece with playful stitch textures, where you can also really have fun with color! We recommend this one if you want to experiment with lots of mini skeins. There are 24 colors to choose from in our Wicker Park Sock Mini line-up. You can do a fall palette, make it a rainbow, or pick whatever color group that best represents you.
Sirena by Melissa Leapman - This one is for you if you are an intermediate knitter who wants to give lace a try! It uses one strand of sock yarn held with a strand of mohair, so you'll have all kinds of options for combinations, whether you want something solid, tonal or variegated! Some of our solid options in sock/fingering weight yarn include Wicker Park Sock, Sister Ananse Fingering and Baby Feet Sock. You can pair any of those with any of our silk & mohair blends.
Vega Shawl by Emma Vining - Choose a beautiful yarn and let it do most of the heavy lifting for you! At the same time, keep it interesting with a combination of stockinette and garter stitch. The construction of this one is asymmetrical, making it easy to wrap and wear. Great DK weight options for this include Ritual Dyes Priestess, Urth Yarns Spiral Grain Light Worsted, or Noro Yarns Kakigori.
(Please note we are waiting on restocks for some of the yarns above, and they will likely be in well before class begins.)
Fall Sunset by Crystal Hiatt - If you have learned basic brioche and want to continue on with it, give this one a try. It's repetitive and meditative while also keeping your hands engaged. This one uses DK weight yarn, and you can mix two colors or more, or alternate something color changing or variegated with a different solid color. Really, there is a whole lot you can do, so get inspired by our DK weight selection!
Forest Floor by Marci Marra - Mosaic knitting has a lot of perks: it looks similar to colorwork but is much easier to do well, you can create so many amazing color combinations, the patterns are stunning, and it is such a meditative style of knitting. Again, we recommend you peruse our DK weight selection to get an idea of the possibilities for this one.
Disco Skunk Shawl by Gotham Knits - Who doesn't want to knit something called Disco Skunk? If you find joy in striping lots of colors, this one is for you. Using simple construction and simple stitches, this one is made for color combos and/or color-changing yarn. You can use any combo of fingering weight/sock yarns, but you should definitely check out our Wicker Park Sock Minis and our Urth Yarns Uneek Fingering.
Classes are for adults and young adults aged 16 years or older.
