Depending on which look you want there are many suitable fabric choices.
For a workwear look, suggested fabrics are heavyweight woven fabric, such as canvas, twill, denim, corduroy. For a dress-like version choose a light to midweight woven fabric such as linen, denim, cotton twill, wool, lightweight canvas. and consider using visible buttons and omitting lower pockets. For a softer variant, more like a cardigan or kaftan, choose a lightweight woven fabric, visible buttons, and no pockets.
